INSPIRATION The inspiration for this collection of four oil paintings:” The balcony oils” comes from the decision to marry realism with abstraction through decoration. The exquisite wrought iron balconies in Athens Greece are depicted in the paintings and act as a barrier between the intense reality of the wild animal in the foreground and the abstraction of nature in the background. The plants are used more as decorative suggestion than a reality, and reflect the natural themes in the ironwork. “The mythological oils” the last two paintings are inspired by Greek Mythology. “ Myth or destiny” features Poseidonos or Zeus hurling a thunderbolt, he is also pointing the way for the viewer, the Lynx in the foreground is smiling like the cheshire cat in Alice in wonderland, he is looking at the viewer and seems to be asking a question: “ Which path will you take?.” “The warning of Hermes” features Hermes also pointing the way and the Leopard in the foreground is looking at the viewer. Paths and the choices we face when confronted with those pathways feature heavily in this collection. The question of choice, whether to choose to take the path that leads to saving wildlife and nature, or to choose another way, is presented allegorically. The animals in these paintings act as guides and stand like sentinels at the gateways. |
